Two prior auction houses attributed this coin to SNG ANS 886 which would make the control mark a bunch of grapes. The control mark more closely resembles the bucranium depicted in Drama 20 and we have therefore reattributed this coin to SNG ANS 847.
Philip II of Macedon was King of Macedon and father of Alexander the Great and Philip III Arrhidaeus. The bronze series of this type is extensive and differentiated principally by the different symbols and letters which appear on the reverse and occasionally on the obverse. These symbols and letters, known as control marks, were used to identify the officials responsible for a particular issue of coinage.
