The Bretti inhabited the southernmost part of Italy, in what today is known as Calabria. Originally a thriving race, they lost their independence after the fall of the Carthaginians and were severely punished by the Romans. The Romans took great parts of their territory away and treated them as second class citizens. The Brutii never recovered from their defeat to their Romans and were lost from history. They are mentioned again in historical records when Spartacus, fleeing from his recent defeat at the hands of Crassus, briefly took refuge in Bruttium.
