Leo IV the Wise or the Philosopher, was the second ruler of the Macedonian dynasty. Despite several marriages he struggled to produce a legitimate heir. After his third marraige, he had a son with his his mistress, who then became his fourth wife. During his reign, the formal discontinuation of the Roman consul and Senate occured. He also contineud his father's mission of codifying Byzantine law, which was recorded in more than 60 books called the Basilika. A prolific writer, he was the author of many works, leading to his epithet.
