Manuel I Comnenus was Byzantine Emperor from 1143 to 1180 AD. An ambitious emperor, his reign marked the last flowering of the Byzantine Empire during which he expanded its territories with an aggressive foreign policy. His success was overshadowed by his defeat in the battle of Myriocephalon and the instability which later followed.
