Korkyra (Corcyra or Kerkyra) was an ancient city situated on what is modern day Corfu, an Ionian Greek island. Its name possibly derived from the word 'Gorgon' (i.e. Medusa), Korkyra was an important trading centre due to its harbours. Its coinage directly inspired the very similar coinage issued by its colonies Apollonia and Dyrrhachion.
