This coin from the kingdom of Pontus features Hera, the wife of Zeus and queen of the gods, as well as an owl. Owls are not uncommon on ancient greek coins. The coinage of Ancient Athens is renowned for its owls. Like the rare Athens Dekadrachm, the owl here appears standing facing with its wings spread. Amisos was a Greek city on the Black Sea coast. Founded in 6th century BC and served as a trade route to the south.
