When this coin was sold at auction, the vendors hypothesised that the coin may have been struck much later, under Kassander. They observed that 'the HΓ monogram can be found on the contemporary tetradrachms in the name of Alexander the Great, which were struck in Amphipolis between 317-305; cf. Le Rider pl. 47, 2.'.
Philip II of Macedon was King of Macedon and father of Alexander the Great and Philip III Arrhidaeus. The bronze series of this type is extensive and differentiated principally by the different symbols and letters which appear on the reverse and occasionally on the obverse. These symbols and letters, known as control marks, were used to identify the officials responsible for a particular issue of coinage.
