This coin features a kithara, the ancient Greek stringed musical instrument, similar to the lyre, from which the word guitar originates from. The Lycian league was a democratic federation of cities, minting a uniform set of federal coinage in bronze and silver. Its model is considered to have later inspired the framers of the constitution of the United States of America: it was one of the confederated governments studied by James Madison ('Father of the Constitution') prior to the Constitutional Convention; and is mentioned twice in the Federalist Papers.
