This coin is published and illustrated in the standard reference for the gold and silver coinage of Philip II: Le Rider, G. Le monnayage d’argent et d’or de Philippe II frappé en Macédoine de 359 à 294. (Paris, 1977).
Philip II of Macedon was King of Macedon and father of Alexander the Great and Philip III Arrhidaeus. The gold staters of this type is differentiated principally by the different symbols and letters which appear. These symbols and letters, known as control marks, were used to identify the officials responsible for a particular issue of coinage.
