This is a brilliantly-struckexample of an Attica, Athens tetradrachm. VF-EF condition with an amazing reverse.
"Owls" were extremely popular as a central currency of the ancient world and thus the design remained unchanged for quite a long period of time. They are probably one of, if not the most popular ancient coins collected today.During 449-413 B.C a huge amout of tetradrachms were minted to meet the financing requirements of extravagant building projects including the Parthenon and also further to cover the cost of the Peloponnesian War.
