The Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt was founded in 305 BC by Ptolemy I Soter, former General to Alexander the Great. At its peak it covered a large geographic area with Alexandria as its capital city. The Kingdom ended with the death of Cleopatra in 30 BC. Ptolemy IX Soter (or "Lathyros") was the eldest son of Ptolemy VIII and Cleopatra III. Both he and his brother Ptolemy X Alexander were kings of Egypt at alternating times during their lives.
