From the Rudolf Berk Collection:

A beautiful, yet affordable specimen of the most famous greek coin style. It has a test cut (by an ancient banker) and has developed a nice patina.

Owls were extremely popular as a central currency of the ancient world and thus the design remained unchanged for quite a long period of time. They are probably one of, if not the most popular ancient coins collected today.

During 449-413 B.C a huge amout of tetradrachms were minted to meet the financing requirements of?extravagant building projects including the Parthenon and also further to cover the cost of the Peloponnesian War.
