The Chalkidian League was a federal state on the Chalcidice peninsula, which existed from circa 430 BC and until 348 BC when it was destroyed by Philip II of Macedon. Its was created during the first phase of the Peloponnesian War by several cities of Chalcidice, whose inhabitants abandoned those cities and moved to Olynthos to form a single state, calling themselves ‘Chalcidians’. The League continued to expand to include other city states. By the time Philip sized and destroyed Olynthos, ending the League, it had grown to include 34 cities.
