The period of issue (Kleudoros group) is named after the engraver or contractor who signed his name in the genitive case on one coin in the series (Williams 334-6). The monogram which appears throughout the series and which is on
this coin must also be his.
Velia was an ancient city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC, the city is most famous for the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno of Elea, who lived there.
