Philip V (Φίλιππος) succeeded his father, Demetrius II of Macedon, as King of the Macedonian Kingdom at the age of 17. Although he was young he quickly proved himself capable as a leader. The coin features the heroic figure, Perseus, of Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, Perseus, a demigod, famously slayed the Gorgon Medusa by using his shield to see her reflection, averting her gaze and thus avoiding being turned into stone.
