Information: Ashton attributes this coin to a mint in Samothrace apparently used as a repository of treasure at the time of the Third Macedonian War. He theorises that these Rhodian-imitative types were issued in great numbers to pay for Macedonian forces and mercenaries during the war.

General: Perseus became the King of Macedon following the death of Philip V. He dislike for Romans and some of his actions led to Rome becoming concerned, ultimately declaring war. This war, later known as the Third Macedonian War, was mainly fought in Macedon. Rome was victorious and Macedon fell under Roman rule as a province.
