General: Established by Thasian colonists I 360/359 BC, the city originally was known as Crenides. However after being conquered in 356 BZC by Philip II of Macedon, the city was renamed to Philippi. It survived under the Roman rule but was abandoned sometime during the Byzantine era. Its ruins still exist today.
