General: The ancient city of Thebes in Boeotia (or "Boiotia) was an arch rival to Athens. The Thebians sided with Xerxes and his Persian forces during the second Persian invasion of Greece (480–479 BC). Although they supported Sparta during the Peloponnesian war (431 BC – 404 BC), they turned against their former allies, ending the Spartan power at the Battle of Leuctra (371 BC) and becoming the most powerful state in Greece. Later, the Thebians were famously defeated by Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great at the Battle of Chaeronea (338 BC), in which their most elite forces (the Sacred Band of Thebes) fell. Two years later, Alexander the Great finished the job by destroying Thebes entirely.
