General: These legionary denarii were issued by Mark Antony before the Battle of Actium in 32 BC to pay his legions and fleet. LEC VI ('C' for G on this coin) on the reverse refers to Legio VI, the Sixth Ironclad Legion which fought with him in Cisalpine Gaul and against Pompey at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC. The obverse reads ANT AVG (‘C’ for G) abbreviating Antonius augurs, to identify the position he held as College of Augur. III VIR R P C abbreviates Triumvir republican constituendae, meaning one of the men of the three men for the restoration of the republic, referring to his membership of the Second Trimvirate together with Octavian and Lepidus.
