General: Trajan was one of the greatest Roman Emperors. A former soldier, he expanded the Roman Empire to its largest size in history. A philanthropist who invested in social welfare and public building programs, he is known as the second of the Five Good Emperors. Minted toward the end of Trajan's reign, the obverse legend is nearly at its fullest, and includes the recently added PARTHICO, ('Parthicus'), a military honour, which 'commemorates the height of Trajan's success, the capture of Ctesiphon and the collapse of the Parthian resistance (BMCRE p. lxxxv).
